A dataset made up of a group of files stored within a directory (e.g. Shape, mid/mif or S57).

Within a directory dataset, the individual files within the directory form the feature types.

Isn't S57 a file-based dataset? It appears that way when opening a S57 file in the Viewer.

S-57 can be either a set of feature files in a directory, or a single S-57 file, or even a catalog - so perhaps it isn't a good example. However, the FME Viewer usually requires selecting a file, even when it is a Feature Type within a directory dataset (eg Shape data).
