Antipodes Mapper

From Fmepedia

This workspace was inspired by a wikipedia article on antipodes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antipodes). The article has a rather funky map showing for each location on the Earth, where its antipodes are. Antipodes, I should perhaps mention, are a point diametrically opposite to a specified location on the Earth's surface.

As a challenge, Safe MVP, Jeff Konnen created a workspace to duplicate the wikipedia image using FME.

Above: This is a classic FME workspace in that it pre-processes the source data (by de-aggregating source polygons and chopping them into points), processes the data to produce the desired results, and then returns the data to its original geometry (using AreaBuilders and Aggregators). Jeff also makes nice use of custom transformers to keep the workspace clean and tidy.

Above: The resulting output as seen in the FME Viewer. The closest inhabitants to the antipodes of Vancouver are located in Port Alfred (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Faure) on the island of Ile de la Possession (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%8Ele_de_la_Possession_%28Crozet%29). Port Alfred (click here to find it in Google Earth) is a research station whose inhabitants have the dubious distinction of having the furthest to travel if they wish to visit Safe's Vancouver HQ.

Above: A close up view shows the antipodes of New Zealand are in the region of Spain and Portugal...

Above: ...and that Uruguay (1) is almost diametrically opposite to South Korea (2).
